The short version

Who is responsible

The team that runs Watchanimee is responsible for your personal data on watchanimee.com (the "controller" under EU and UK data protection law). Contact: hello@watchanimee.com.

Data that stays in your browser

Your list, watch history and position in each episode, episodes watched, ratings, followed series, notification settings and Theme Lab settings are kept in your browser's local storage (keys that start with wa.). If you do not sign in, this data never leaves your device. Clearing your browser's site data deletes it.

Your account

When you create an account we store:

We use this to provide the account you asked for (legal basis: performance of a contract). It is kept until you delete your account.

Comments, reactions and chat

Comments, replies, likes and episode reactions are stored on our server and shown to everyone, with your display name. If you are signed in they are linked to your account. They are kept until you delete them or your account; each episode keeps its newest 500 comments.

Live chat messages are relayed to the people in the room and the last 80 messages of each room are held in the server's memory so newcomers see recent chat. They are not written to disk and disappear when the server restarts. Watch-party play, pause and seek events are relayed in the same way and not stored.

Contact form and email

If you use the contact form we store your email address, the topic, your message and your IP address, to answer you and to stop abuse. We keep them for up to 12 months after your request is resolved. Password-reset emails are sent through our email provider.

Technical data

Like every website, our server receives your IP address and browser details with each request. We use the IP address briefly, in memory, to limit how often comments, chat messages, sign-in attempts and forms can be sent, and we do not store it for that purpose. Our hosting provider may keep standard server logs for security for a limited time.

Cookies

We set one cookie, wa_sid, and only when you sign in. It keeps you signed in for up to 30 days, cannot be read by scripts on the page and is strictly necessary for the account to work, so it does not need consent. We set no analytics or advertising cookies. Local storage (described above) is used for your settings and guest data.

Third-party players and chat embeds can set their own cookies when they load. See their privacy policies, below.

Third parties

We do not sell personal data or share it for targeted advertising. We disclose data to authorities only when the law requires it.

Security

Passwords are hashed with scrypt, sign-in sessions use a random token that is stored only as a hash, sign-in attempts are rate-limited, and the site is served over HTTPS. No system is perfectly secure; if a breach affects your data we will tell you and the relevant authorities as the law requires.

You can, at any time and without asking us:

Depending on where you live (for example under the GDPR, UK GDPR or California's CCPA) you may also have the right to object to or restrict processing and to complain to your data protection authority. Write to hello@watchanimee.com and we will answer within 30 days. We do not sell or share personal information as defined by the CCPA.

Children

Watchanimee is not meant for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect their data; if you believe a child under 13 has created an account, tell us and we will delete it.

Where data is stored

Our servers are located in the country of our hosting provider. If that is outside your country, we rely on safeguards the law recognises (such as the European Commission's standard contractual clauses) for the transfer.

Changes to this policy

If we change how we use your data we will update this page and its date. For significant changes we will also tell signed-in users before the change takes effect.
